Qualification of UMC Members
As UMC Members MUST be loyal to United Methodist Church and participates in its ministries by: (Acts 2:42-47, Acts 1:8, Galatians 6:6, Hebrews 13:12-13, 16
Thus, as a United Methodist, one shall participate in its ministries by enforcing Acts 2:42-47; Acts 1:8 through:
- Their prayers
- Their presence
- Their gifts’ Acts2:42-47, Galatians 6:6, Nehemiah 13:10-13, Num18 :21
- Their service
- Their witness Mtt 10:31-33, Acts 1:8 , Roman 10:13-15,
As United Methodist members shall be able to bound in sacred covenant to shoulder the burdens, share the risks and celebrates the joys of fellow members (Galatians 6:2).
UMC believes in the works of piety
Piety means sincere devotion to God. It also means the way of life that shows this devotion. Piety is the practice of worshiping God and Serving people in Love.
That all United Methodist are called to be Christians of the Wesleyan heritage, which means to participate in works of piety such as:- 1Tim 2:2, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:6,11; Titus 1:1; 2Peter 1:3,7
- private and public prayer,Act1:13-14, 20:7, Mark 1:35,Ezra 10:1
- worship, Gen 12:8,John 4:19-24
- the sacraments, Acts 20:7,1st Cor 10:16-17,1st Cor 11:24,26
- study, 2nd Tim2:15-16, Ezra 7:10,
- Confirmation / Catechist vows Acts 10: 2-5, 25-33 - Confirmation is both a human act of commitment and the gracious action of the Holy Spirit strengthening and empowering discipleship.
Membership reception service – one must have been received into a United Methodist membership service ceremony. Acts 8: 14-17, 38,
United Methodist Church Membership
Definition of Membership in a local UMC includes:
- Having been baptized in one Baptism- in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:5
- Professing their faith in Christ Jesus. Romans 10:9
- all people who have received Christian baptism in the local congregation or elsewhere, or Mark 9:38-40, Luke 9:49-50
- all people transferred to the local United Methodist church subsequent to baptism in some other congregation. Act 8:14-17
- For statistical purposes, all professing church members’ in a local UMC are equated to membership.
To become a professing members of a Local UMC
Therefore, One MUST have been:-
- Be able to renounce the Spiritual forces of wickedness, reject devil powers of the world and respond to their sins. James 4:7
- Accept the freedom and power of God that makes you to resist evil, injustice and oppression , Colossians 1:13-14
- Baptized either as an Infant /a Child or as an Adult- Gen 17:12-13, Act 16:15, 33, Acts18:8, 10:14-48,1Corr 1:16, Ps 51:5, Ps 119:103, Deut 6:6-9, Mtt 28:19.
- And if already baptized in another Christian church then be received into a UMC Membership. Acts 8:14-17
- Be Catechized- Mtt 28:20 (which is a period of instruction and nurtured in the meaning of the faith, UMC Doctrines, History ,Organization& Administration of a Local Church using material approved by UMC- Mtt 10:31-33)
- then be able to receive the Lords Table- Act 20:7, Act 2:46
And One MUST commit themselves to a life of discipleship, and be confirmed.
Methodist participates in the works of Mercy
As United Methodist are called to be Christians of the Wesleyan Heritage to participate in Works of Mercy. So the Bible says in James 2:17 that “so faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. NRSV”
Examples of works of Mercy
- Allowing women to exhort Christians and also preach the word of God.
- Founding orphanages
- Starting and operating schools
- Lobbying Parliament to pass laws which are not against human rights-(slavery).
- Visiting prisoners in prison and before hanging
- Rejecting all forms of war
- Condemning distillers of alcohol who sold to poor people

A British theologian summarizes Wesley’s message of God’s grace as follows:
- All men need to be saved. Romans3:22-23, Mark 16:15-16
- All men can be saved, John 3:16, Heb 7:25
- All men can know that they are saved, 2Corr 5:14-15
- All men can be saved to the uttermost, Ephesians 2:8, 1st Timothy 2:3-4

The Methodist Societies
Wesley built up a structure that would sustain Methodism preaching ministry. The first Society was developed in Bristol. They were initially small groups who met weekly for:
- Worship,
- fellowship,
- prayer and
- instruction
It composed of members who had “the desire to flee away from the wrath to come” (Mtt3:7-8, Luke 3:7). The Methodist societies served as an rena for proclamation of the Gospel and the people to commit themselves as selves as followers of Christ.

Brief History
The United Methodist Church legally came into force on April 23rd, 1968 when two denominations namely: The Evangelical United Brethren Church and The Methodist Church united together in a historic conference in Dallas, Taxes USA. The Constitution was adopted in Chicago, Illinois, on Nov. 11, 1966, by the General Conferences of The Evangelical United Brethren Church and The Methodist Church and thereafter by the requisite vote in the annual conferences of the two churches. However, United Methodist Church shares a common history and heritage with other Methodist and Wesleyan bodies. The denomination is believed to originate from an England Anglican preacher John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother, Charles (1707-1788). The duo’s missionary passion and ministry made the movement spread throughout the global until it reached Kenya in early 1960s the British Methodist and 1990s the United Methodist respectively.
Origin of United Methodist church in Kenya
The UMC in Kenya was birthed in 1992 January, as three pastors led by Rev David Egessa, Thomas Moses Adenyi and Carol Alois Ososo sat under the granary contemplating the need to have a mission emanating from the region. Therefore, Rev Ferdinand David Egessa met with Rev Solomon Muwanga who was then the leader of UMC Uganda and struck a deal to have UMC registered in Kenya. The three leaders in Kenya then were Charismatic movements UZIMA TELE (Abundant Life) MINISTRIES of both Busia Kenya & Uganda which later changed its name to Lord’s Ministries. Thus, UMC was legally registered in Kenya on Sept 7th 1993. Hence, officially received to the then Burundi Annual conference session at Methodist Guest house in July 26th-to 30th 1996 as Kenya District with only 13 churches forming five parishes namely Dirakho, Funyula, Sagania, Bufuma and Port Victoria with a population of 3,500 people, according to Burundi Annual Conference 1996 as the conference brought together a total of 73 delegates as: 12 from Burundians plus 10 observers, Kenyans 16, Ugandans 31, Rwandese 3, (UMCO UMC 1996 p 6).
The Apostolic Spirit of the Great Commission (Mathew 28:18-20) made the young UMC spread to all regions formerly then the eight provinces of Kenya, today 47 Counties. Therefore, during Annual Conferences Session Held at Lake Side Tourist lodge Naivasha in 1999, necessitated the creation of two District in Kenya namely: Busia, (the Mother District) then Nyanza District. Naivasha UMC Parish was an extension of the UMC Mission work in Nairobi giving birth to the church in Naivasha. The Naivasha circuit and Kayole St John’s Parish in Nairobi formed what was formerly known as Central District now Naivasha, Nakuru and Nairobi districts created in October 10th, 2007. Others which were created included Nyanza Central out of the former Nyanza district. Lately, there are fourteen districts in Kenya and one mission district in Ethiopia. The 2016 Africa Central Conference created Kenya-Ethiopia Annual Conference out of the former East Africa Annual Conference of United Methodist Church which ratified and dissolved by the 26th session of the East Africa joint session in Nangina, Busia district Kenya.

The three Simple Rules teachings of United Methodist
The United Methodist Christians members observe in their Christian journey:
First: By doing no harm
How? By avoiding evil of every kind that which is generally practiced, such as: Galatians5:15 “But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” KJV
- The taking of the name of God in vain. Exo 20:1-
- The profaning the day of the Lord, either by doing ordinary work therein or by buying or selling. Exo 34:14
- Drunkenness: buying or selling spirituous liquors, or drinking them, unless in cases of extreme necessity.
- Fighting, quarreling, brawling, brother going to law with brother; returning evil for evil, or railing for railing; the using many words in buying or selling. James 4:1-7
- The buying or selling goods that have not paid the duty.
- The Uncharitable or unprofitable conversation; speaking evil of magistrates or of ministers. 1Peter 2:13-15
- Doing to others as we would not they should do unto us. Mtt 7:12
