Example of code used above. It is a combination of Info Slide CSS and Multibox. You can actually use any of the info slide styles below just be sure to wrap with the 2 pages DIVs which are "pages_portfolio three" and if you want padding between each image the "pages_padding" DIV. Notice on the first DIV there is a "three". You can enter one, two, three, four, five and six depending on how many portfolio items you want on one row (Be sure to keep that space before the three too):

The Church as Connection

United Methodist leaders often speak of the denomination as “the connection.” This concept has been central to Methodism from its beginning. The United Methodist structure and organization began as a means of accomplishing the mission of spreading scriptural holiness. Methodism’s founder, John Wesley, recognized the need for an organized system of communication and accountability and developed what he called the “connexion,” a network of classes, societies, and annual conferences.

Qualification of UMC Members

As UMC Members MUST be loyal to United Methodist Church and participates in its ministries by: (Acts 2:42-47, Acts 1:8, Galatians 6:6, Hebrews 13:12-13, 16

Thus, as a United Methodist, one shall participate in its ministries by enforcing Acts 2:42-47; Acts 1:8 through:

  • Their prayers
  • Their presence
  • Their gifts’ Acts2:42-47, Galatians 6:6, Nehemiah 13:10-13, Num18 :21
  • Their service
  • Their witness Mtt 10:31-33, Acts 1:8 , Roman 10:13-15,

As United Methodist members shall be able to bound in sacred covenant to shoulder the burdens, share the risks and celebrates the joys of fellow members (Galatians 6:2).

UMC believes in the works of piety

Piety means sincere devotion to God. It also means the way of life that shows this devotion. Piety is the practice of worshiping God and Serving people in Love.

That all United Methodist are called to be Christians of the Wesleyan heritage, which means to participate in works of piety such as:- 1Tim 2:2, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:6,11; Titus 1:1; 2Peter 1:3,7

  • private and public prayer,Act1:13-14, 20:7, Mark 1:35,Ezra 10:1
  • worship, Gen 12:8,John 4:19-24
  • the sacraments, Acts 20:7,1st Cor 10:16-17,1st Cor 11:24,26
  • study, 2nd Tim2:15-16, Ezra 7:10,
  • Confirmation / Catechist vows Acts 10: 2-5, 25-33 - Confirmation is both a human act of commitment and the gracious action of the Holy Spirit strengthening and empowering discipleship.

Membership reception service –  one must have been received into a United Methodist membership service ceremony. Acts 8: 14-17, 38,

United Methodist Church Membership

Definition of Membership in a local UMC includes:

  • Having been baptized in one Baptism- in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:5
  • Professing their faith in Christ Jesus. Romans 10:9
  • all people who have received Christian baptism in the local congregation or elsewhere, or Mark 9:38-40, Luke 9:49-50
  • all people transferred to the local United Methodist church subsequent to baptism in some other congregation. Act 8:14-17
  • For statistical purposes, all professing church members’ in a local UMC are equated to membership.

To become a professing members of a Local UMC

Therefore, One MUST have been:-

  • Be able to renounce the Spiritual forces of wickedness, reject devil powers of the world and respond to their sins. James 4:7
  • Accept the freedom and power of God that makes you to resist evil, injustice and oppression , Colossians 1:13-14
  • Baptized either as an Infant /a Child or as an Adult- Gen 17:12-13, Act 16:15, 33, Acts18:8, 10:14-48,1Corr 1:16, Ps 51:5, Ps 119:103, Deut 6:6-9, Mtt 28:19.
  • And if already baptized in another Christian church then be received into a UMC Membership. Acts 8:14-17
  • Be Catechized- Mtt 28:20 (which is a period of instruction and nurtured in the meaning of the faith, UMC Doctrines, History ,Organization& Administration of a Local Church using material approved by UMC- Mtt 10:31-33)
  • then be able to receive the Lords Table- Act 20:7, Act 2:46

And One MUST commit themselves to a life of discipleship, and be confirmed.

Methodist participates in the works of Mercy

As United Methodist are called to be Christians of the Wesleyan Heritage to participate in Works of Mercy. So the Bible says in James 2:17 that “so faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. NRSV”

Examples of works of Mercy

  • Allowing women to exhort Christians and also preach the word of God.
  • Founding orphanages
  • Starting and operating schools
  • Lobbying Parliament to pass laws which are not against human rights-(slavery).
  • Visiting prisoners in prison and before hanging
  • Rejecting all forms of war
  • Condemning distillers of alcohol who sold to poor people

According to Philip Watson;

A British theologian summarizes Wesley’s message of God’s grace as follows:

  • All men need to be saved. Romans3:22-23, Mark 16:15-16
  • All men can be saved, John 3:16, Heb 7:25
  • All men can know that they are saved, 2Corr 5:14-15
  • All men can be saved to the uttermost, Ephesians 2:8, 1st Timothy 2:3-4

Thus, Wesley adopted a pragmatic organizational structure for nurture with these features:

The Methodist Societies

Wesley built up a structure that would sustain Methodism preaching ministry. The first Society was developed in Bristol. They were initially small groups who met weekly for:

  • Worship,
  • fellowship,
  • prayer and
  • instruction

It composed of members who had “the desire to flee away from the wrath to come” (Mtt3:7-8, Luke 3:7). The Methodist societies served as an rena for proclamation of the Gospel   and    the people to commit themselves as selves as followers of Christ.

Our Believe

United Methodist believes in the Bible God’s Word that all things can wither & fades; but the word of our God will stand forever” Isaiah 40:8 “

United Methodist believe and know that the Bible is ageless because of the great stories and events through which God spoke and still speaks to us by His Son through the writings of the prophets, and the apostles.{ Hebrew 1:1-2 }

United Methodist know that the Bible is ageless because through its great events that God reveled the purpose for which God made us and became flesh as He dwelt among us. {John 1:14}

Whereas United Methodist also believes that:

  • God is the ultimate Spirit-because He is the beginning and the end, “Alpha and Omega” {Revelation1:8.}
  • United Methodists believes in the unseen God who sustains us; “God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth” {John4:24}.
  • United Methodist believes that God is the ultimate Person in that God dies things, God creates, sustains, provides as God acts daily on our lives through His Son Jesus Christ. As Jesus said, “My Father is still working, and l also am working” {John 5:17}
  • United Methodist believes in supreme power but also in love. That God’s power is unfailing expression of love. Zechariah saw it when he spoke for God saying, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts” {Zechariah 4:6}
  • United Methodist believes in the Trinity- God is three in- one. {John 14:16}

The three Simple Rules teachings of United Methodist

The United Methodist Christians members observe in their Christian journey:

First: By doing no harm

How? By avoiding evil of every kind that which is generally practiced, such as:   Galatians5:15But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” KJV

  • The taking of the name of God in vain. Exo 20:1-
  • The profaning the day of the Lord, either by doing ordinary work therein or by buying or selling. Exo 34:14
  • Drunkenness: buying or selling spirituous liquors, or drinking them, unless in cases of extreme necessity.
  • Fighting, quarreling, brawling, brother going to law with brother; returning evil for evil, or railing for railing; the using many words in buying or selling. James 4:1-7
  • The buying or selling goods that have not paid the duty.
  • The Uncharitable or unprofitable conversation; speaking evil of magistrates or of ministers. 1Peter 2:13-15
  • Doing to others as we would not they should do unto us. Mtt 7:12

“Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionist, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

Secondly: By doing good; 1 Peter 2:15

How? By being in every kind merciful to all men: 3Jn11b, Acts 10:38,

  • To physical needs, by giving food to the hungry, by clothing the naked, by visiting or helping them that are sick or in prison. Mtt 25:35-36
  • To their souls, by instructing, reproving, or exhorting all we have any intercourse with; trampling under foot that enthusiastic doctrine that we are not to do good unless our hearts be free to it.” 1st Tim4:15, 2nd Tim 2:14-15, 3:16
  • to them that are of the household of faith or groaning so to be; employing them preferably to others; buying one of another, helping each other in business, and so much the more because the world will love its own and them only. Mtt7:12, Acts 5:1-
  • By all possible diligence and frugality, that the gospel be not blamed. 1Peter 3:13.

All who desire to continue in these societies should continue to evidence their desire of salvation, 1 Peter 3:12

Thirdly: Stay in Love with God:

How? ”By attending upon all the ordinances of God”; such are: Ps 105:4

  • The public worship of God. 1st Tim 2:1-4
  • The ministry of the Word either read or expounded. Nehemiah 8:1-6
  • The Supper of the Lord. Mtt 26:26b-30, Mk14:17-24,Lk22:14-30,Jn13:21-30
  • Family and private prayer. Mk 1:35, 1st Tim 2:8, Mtt 14:23,7;7b,9:37-38
  • Searching the Scriptures. 1st Tim 4:13, 2Tim3:15-17
  • Fasting or abstinence. Neh 1:4, Mk 9:17-29, Lk9:38-42, Mtt 17:14-21

Who were are as United Methodists

There are four things you must undergo to become a member in the United Methodist church:

  • Baptismal service Lk 7:28-30,Jn 3:3-5
  • Profess / witness the Christian faith –Ephesians 6 :20
  • Confirmed or catechist Mtt 28:20, Acts 8:26-38
  • Received in a United Methodist membership thro a reception service, Acts 10:2-5,34-48

United Methodist Organizational structure

The UMC is organized in structures which makes Connectionalism a reality. Connectionalism is the way how the UMC is linked together through same:-

  • standard organization,
  • itinerancy,
  • appointment system,
  • and existence of agencies
  • and through giving.

Through this linking the church has been able to accomplish great things that no one or anyone church could accomplish alone.  There is No individual person speaks on behalf of the church but it is the structure that makes decision for the church at all levels.

Connectionalism provides a linkage between members, congregations, churches, charges, districts, annual, central/jurisdictional and general conferences into a world wide web of human and material relationships. This linkage is multi leveled global into scope and local in thrust.

The Organisation

The UMC is organization has three basic structures such as legislative, Executive and Judicial as here bellow:

1. General Conference

Is its legislative branch just like our political parliament. It is composed of not less than 600 and more than 1,000 delegates of equal numbers of both clergy and lay dawned from all United Methodist Local Churches all around the world. Lay persons are non-ordained church members and leaders. They are involved in the ministry of the word, service and justice.

Duties of general conference:

  • – Conditions, privileges, and duties of church membership
  • – Duties of clergy
  • – Powers and duties of jurisdictional, central, annual, missionary, district, charge conferences and congregational meetings.
  • – Organizational and promotion of church administrative work and powers and duties of bishop.
  • – Publishes the book of discipline, book of worship, book of hymnal, book of resolutions

a) Central Conferences

The UMC has been organized into regions called Central conference outside USA and Jurisdictional conferences which are created by the General conference in accordance to para ¶540. Today, ¶540 (3.). The United Methodist Church outside the United States the church is divided into seven Central Conferences in three continents namely; Africa, Europe and Philippines:

The central conference have the authority to edit and publish a own central conference book of discipline

The central conferences are authorized by the General Conference,

The General Conference provides to  central conference shall have a total of at least thirty clergy and thirty lay delegates on the basis of representation as set forth in this section, except as the General Conference may fix a different number.

There are five Jurisdictional (regions) in the United States of America of which each has eight to 15 Annual Conferences. And seven (7) Central Conferences outside America – three in Africa:

  1. West Africa,
  2. The Congo and
  3. Africa Central Conferences and
  4. Central and South Europe Central Conference;
  5. Germany Central Conference;
  6. Northern Europe Central Conference;
  7. Philippines Central Conference.

These conferences meet every four years after the general conference sitting.

b) Annual Conference

The Term Annual conference refers to both the geographical boundaries of the conference and to the yearly meeting of the members of the annual conference.

Annual conference are Authorized by Central conference or jurisdiction conference apart from the Missionary conference which is created by the General Conference.

Therefore, United Methodist Churches in the outside the United States, has annual conferences, provisional annual conferences, missionary conferences, mission conferences, and missions, in such numbers as the General Conference by a two-thirds vote shall determine.

Each local church is located within a district, and each district is located within an annual conference.

Annual Conference is formed from a multiple districts, connected to one another.

 The churches of the Annual Conference work together in lots of ways:

  • sending local churches leaders to work on conference boards and committees,
  • identifying candidates for ministry,
  • giving financial support to ministries and mission projects sponsored by the Conference,

The important functions of annual conference

  • Annual Conference elects delegates to General Conference and the Central Conference.
  • Annual conference also determines who shall be admitted to its membership, Ordained, retired or granted special leave.
  • Annual Conference votes on all constitutional amendments as they may be proposed.

Annual Conference membership includes all the clergy members of the conference and at least an equal number of lay members. Each local charge has at least one lay member of the annual conference who is elected by the local church charge conference.

2. Council of Bishops

This is an executive branch which implements what is passed at the legislative sessions. However, UMC has no single executive officer but Council of Bishops elects a president who serves two years.  The Council of Bishops is made up of all Active and retired Bishops of the United Methodist Church.

The Council of Bishops speaks to the Church and from the Church speaks to the world.

The Council of Bishops gives leadership in quest for Christian Unity and Inter-religious relationships.

Bishop serves as a general superintendent of the entire United Methodist Church.

Bishop in the UMC tradition, bishops are not ordained but elected among ordained clergies (specifically the order of elders) and consecrated to the office of a Bishop.

Bishops presides over annual Conference, Central Conferences and also general conference sessions.

3. Judicial Council

It is the denomination’s “supreme court” interprets church law and determines constitutionality of proceedings at all levels of the church life, namely at General Conference, jurisdictional / Central Conferences, Annual Conferences, District Conference  and Charge / Circuits/ Parish as well as Local Church. It’s a nine member elected at the general conference.

  1. Agencies (Ministries) - The term agency describes various councils, boards, commissions, committees, divisions or other unity. A general agency operates at the general church level. General agencies are created by and responsible to the General Conference. The purposes of the general agencies or ministries provide resources and services that will enable individual congregations to serve God effectively in the world.
  2. Districts and charges / Parishes and projects - Each District has unique success and challenges, Just like our political governments still fighting for the enemies of the societies in Africa for development. The UMC is neither left behind today is being challenged with ignorance, Poverty and Diseases.

            All Districts Share Challenges to Building Congregations:

  • Lack of Trained and Ordained Pastors - “Illiteracy or Ignorance”
  • Minimal salary support to Pastors churches not able to give enough support
  • Lack of Land and Church Buildings to propagate evangelism;
  • Poverty eating the Christians in the societies / local churches.
